"FUN HOME:" SUICIDE, SEXUALITY AND ILLUSTRATIONS OF PEOPLE HAVING SEX (AS ORIGINALLY POSTED WITH RECENT UPDATE)

"FUN HOME: A FAMILY TRAGICOMIC"

WARNING: Mature content

This book is a graphic novel, meaning, the story is told in drawn illustrations like a comic book.

Depicted as an autobiography and award winner. Adults have described it as a humorous take on a tragic childhood.

Students as young as 14 years old have been able to check out this book from their school libraries. That will likely change August 28th of 2022, when a new law takes effect.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT:

It tells the story of "how her closeted gay father killed himself a few months after she came out as a lesbian."

WHERE IT IS IN ROCKWOOD

We don't know how many classrooms it may be in because there are no official records that track that.

We do know the book was on the shelves of the temporarily defunct Individualized Learning Center (ILC), an alternative educational program.

The ILC is for vulnerable students "who are credit deficient, have significant fear or anxiety in the school environment, and other struggles that make it hard for them to focus and thrive in the high school environment. This program allows students to get their high school diploma in an environment that suits them. "

Parent Concerns:

Explicit sex acts in illustrations

Not for minor children

Descriptions don’t indicate intimate images

ACTION: Formal challenge submitted by parents Nov 2021

RESULT: Rejected because the ILC doesn't currently have students there.

Status: Destiny library database last showed it as "available" in Rockwood in July, 2022. A district administrator said it is "lost." A recent check shows it is no longer in the database.
