WARNING: SEXUALLY EXPLICIT CONTENT; ROCKWOOD LIBRARY BOOK INCLUDES DILDOS, ORAL SEX, ORGASM
Update August 28, 2022:
A new law forced Rockwood to remove this book.
--------------
Rockwood parents were stunned that these full color illustrations of sex acts and sex terms would be in a school library book.
Title: "Gender Queer"
Author: Maia Kobabe
WARNING: Mature content
Language:
hip thrusting
vagina slime
strap-on harness
dildo
masturbation
orgasm
vibrator
What the book is about:
“A graphic novel memoir chronicling the author's journey to coming out as nonbinary and asexual to the author's family and society at large.”
(Graphic means comic book style.)
After a district committee reviewed it and decided to keep it in the library, parents and a Rockwood teacher appealed. It didn't work. The decision was upheld.
According to the committee, the definition of pornography “does not apply to library books.”
That no longer matters.
Because of a new law that took effect August 28th, schools now have to look at whether images in books are "sexually explicit."
The law makes it a class A misdemeanor for schools to provide sexually explicit images to students. That's why librarians removed it from Rockwood schools. If schools had continued to provide this book to students, personnel could face a year in jail and/or a $2,000 fine.
"Gender Queer..." was previously available to kids as young as 14, in 3 of Rockwood's high schools.
Rockwood library database records originally showed the book is in these school libraries:
Lafayette High School
Eureka High School
Rockwood Summit High School
