HOLIDAY GIVING: YOUR DONATION CAN HELP THIS ROCKWOOD TEACHER REINFORCE LANGUAGE ARTS CONCEPTS WITH HER STUDENTS

This holiday season, we are highlighting specific needs Rockwood teachers have placed on a site called Donors Choose

Donors Choose is a way for teachers to raise money for things they would like to add to their classrooms, to better serve their students.

DONATIONS VS. TAX DOLLARS
At at time when taxpayers don't always agree with the way the Rockwood school district spends their tax dollars, donations such as these, made directly to teachers, go toward improving student learning.

We noticed 6 teachers requesting donations right now in Rockwood. We will be posting all of them in the order of their deadlines.

TODAY'S POST
Today's post is for two requests posted by Mrs. Hughes, a 7th grade Language Arts teacher at Rockwood South Middle School.

VISUAL FOR LEARNING TERMS
Mrs. Hughes is raising money for easel size post-it notes that she plans to use so her Language Arts students can quickly identify skills such as summarizing, inferencing, or drawing conclusions.

Edited to add: thanks to generous donations today, the easel sticky notes have been fully funded: https://www.donorschoose.org/.../easel-pads.../7628366/

STOOLS TO FIT MORE STUDENTS
Mrs. Hughes is still raising money for smaller stools that she says will enable her to double the number of students she can work with around her teaching table.

There are 5 days left to help her raise the $252.00 she still needs.

A quick online search shows the stools likely are similar to the one seen below:

WHY HELP?
Student performance nationwide has been in the spotlight after the learning loss experienced due to Covid and virtual learning.

SCORES
According to the state's data, only 60.6% of Rockwood's Language Arts students scored proficient or above on standardized tests in the spring of 2022.

According to the state's definitions, proficient means an adequate understanding.

Source: DESE (Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education)

39.4% of Rockwood's Language Arts students scored basic or below basic that year.

At the time of this writing, the state has not yet made available the data for 2023's tests.

Note: We typically provide a link to the state's data, but, the link is temporarily not working while the state updates the data to include last spring's scores.
